At the end of each worship service, the FirstLight band plays a beautiful song, "Take to the World" during which the entire congregation holds hands and praises God with lyrics we all know by heart. The younger folks like to swing their arms back and forth, hands locked with their peers, and the little children emerge from Sunday School to join in the festivities. It's a joy to see the young ones dancing to their favorite praise song. It's a weekly celebration! Occasionally the band mixes things up by varying the feel, tempo or genre of our special song. In recent months they have introduced a country mix, as well as a lively 1950's era heavy-on-the-drums mix which the congregation enjoys as evidenced by exaggerated arm swinging and big grins. But today the band surprised us with an island flavor of "Take to the World." You know, steel-drum type music with a decidedly laid back baseline. It was fun to listen to the new instrumentation, so I decided to read the words on the handy-dandy video screen rather than sing them, and let the music wash over me. "Take to the world this love, hope and faith. Take to the world this rare, relentless grace. And like the three-in-one, know you must become what you want to save. Because that's still the way He takes to the world."
The words "know you must become" slapped me in the face. Was I becoming complacent in my faith walk? What was I becoming? Oh sure, I have faith, but what about my actions? Jesus calls us to be in service. I offer the following prayer:
Heavenly Father, creator of all things, have mercy on me, a sinner. I have not taken your message to the world to the best of my ability. Please guide me and walk with me, keep me non-complacent, and give me the discipline to humbly serve you and others. In the name of Christ Jesus I pray. Amen.
